Relegated: Sunshine Stars Send Gombe United Down to NNL

On Sunday, Gombe United became the first team to be demoted from the Nigerian top division this season.

This marks their fourth relegation since the start of the millennium, with only Kwara Utd (6), Wikki Tourists (5), and Jigawa Golden Stars experiencing more.

The 2-0 home loss to Sunshine Stars on NPFL matchday 34 sealed their fate.

Goals by Promise Awosanmi and Lucky Nwafor, in the ninth and 30th minutes respectively, intensified Gombe United’s troubles and aided Sunshine Stars’ fight against relegation.

After three consecutive seasons in the top flight, Gombe United’s relegation was confirmed with this defeat.

Having struggled this season with 17 losses and just eight wins, Gombe United will now move to the Nigerian National League (NNL).

They lost five of their last six matches, earning only 25 points, conceding 63 goals, and scoring just 19.

Despite their relegation being confirmed, Gombe United still have more than four matches left this season.

Their upcoming games include a match against Katsina United on Sunday, followed by fixtures against Abia Warriors, Rivers United, and finally, a home game against league leaders Enugu Rangers.
