Former Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) golden boot winner, Chijioke Akuneto, has officially made a move to South African club Sekhukhune United.
The 25-year-old winger achieved the prestigious NPFL golden boot award in 2022 while playing for Rivers United, contributing 19 crucial goals that helped lead the team to lift the NPFL trophy.
Akuneto’s outstanding performance on the final day of the season secured his victory, surpassing competitors Victor Mbaoma and Yusuff Abdulazeez by a three-goal margin.
A Journey of Success and Transitions:
Chijioke Akuneto began his NPFL career with MFM FC but later transferred to FC Heartland in 2019 as a free agent.
After two successful seasons with FC Heartland, he moved to Rivers United in 2021, once again as a free agent.
His remarkable goal-scoring abilities caught the attention of Enyimba, and he joined the team as a free agent, eager to make a significant impact.
However, despite high expectations, Akuneto couldn’t find his rhythm and struggled to secure a regular spot in Coach Finidi George’s starting lineup.
A Fresh Start in South Africa:
With the aim of rediscovering his form and reinvigorating his career, Chijioke Akuneto made a bold move to join Sekhukhune United in South Africa.
The ambitious winger has already joined his new teammates for pre-season training.
Having arrived in South Africa, Akuneto is determined to work hard and find his footing once more, hoping to make a positive impact on his new team’s upcoming season.
Sekhukhune United’s Challenge Ahead:
As the 2023/24 DSTV Premiership season approaches, Chijioke Akuneto and his Sekhukhune United teammates are gearing up for a tough test against formidable opponents Mamelodi Sundowns.
The league campaign is set to resume on 4th August, and fans are eager to witness the Nigerian star’s contribution to the South African club’s journey.
