Remo Stars defender Sodiq Ismail made headlines today by securing his ninth assist during their Nigeria Premier League game against Enyimba.
The 20-year-old played a crucial role by providing the assist for the game’s sole goal, enabling the Sky Blue Stars to secure a narrow victory over the defending champions on Wednesday.
In the rescheduled NPFL matchday five fixture, the defender showcased his prowess yet again, guiding Remo Stars to a 1-0 win at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
After a tense encounter, the visitors broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, with Samad Kadiri heading in a fine cross from Ismail Sodiq to give Remo Stars the lead.
This assist marked Sodiq Ismail’s ninth of the season, as his brilliant cross was converted by Samad Khadiri at the near post, providing the halftime advantage for Remo Stars.
Despite the People’s Elephant showing high spirits and creating several opportunities, Remo Stars’ goalkeeper, Kayode Bankole, was formidable, denying all attempts and securing a clean sheet.
Maintaining their narrow lead, the visitors held on until the final whistle, claiming all three points.
With nine assists in just 10 league games this season, Sodiq Ismail is making a strong case for himself in the Super Eagles team. Notably, he was also the top assist provider in the NPFL last season.
Many Nigerians are now advocating for his inclusion in the Nigerian AFCON squad, believing it would be a significant disappointment if he were overlooked.
Following this victory, the Daniel Ogunmodede side has climbed to second place on the NPFL table with 19 points, displacing Doma United.
The Ogun State-based team is now eagerly anticipating their upcoming fixture against Plateau United on Sunday.
