Amas Obasogie, the goalkeeper for Bendel Insurance, made history in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) despite his team’s loss to Enyimba.
His standout moment came through an assist that led to Bendel Insurance’s equalizer against Enyimba, showcasing not just his goalkeeping skills but also marking him as the season’s second goalkeeper to make such a crucial play, following Osayi Kingdom from Doma United.
Enyimba International finally broke a fifteen-year winless streak against Benin-based Bendel Insurance, securing a 2-1 victory in a highly anticipated match of the Nigeria Premier Football League, held in Aba.
The game witnessed a thrilling turn of events. Initially, the hosts took the lead with Joseph Atule’s goal in the 70th minute.
However, just five minutes later, Amas Obasogie’s assist set up Ismael Seriki to equalize for Bendel Insurance.
The intense battle continued until Chijioke Mbaoma scored the winning goal for Enyimba in the 80th minute, propelling them from 16th to eighth position on the league table with their fourth win of the season.
Despite the loss, Bendel Insurance maintains a strong sixth position in the league with 19 points from nine games.
Enyimba’s victory, however, marks a breakthrough, ending their winless streak against Monday Odigie’s side dating back to February 2008.
Under Finidi George’s leadership, Enyimba, with 13 points from eight games, displayed resilience and determination, signaling a potential turning point in their season.
This victory not only boosts their standing in the league but also signals an end to their struggles against Bendel Insurance, setting the stage for more triumphs in the ongoing season.
Their focus now shifts to the Oriental Classic against Heartland, taking place on Saturday.
