Lookman Ademola starred for Atalanta in their hard-fought victory against Serie A newcomers Genoa at the Gewiss Stadium.
The Super Eagles forward netted the crucial opener in Atalanta’s 2-0 win over newly-promoted Genoa on Sunday.
The 26-year-old Nigerian international earned the starting position when Atalanta faced Genoa in their Serie A clash.
Atalanta dominated much of the first half but couldn’t find the net. In the 38th minute, the former Leicester City man, Lookman had an excellent opportunity to score, but Nicola Leali denied his attempt.
Despite Atalanta’s offensive efforts, the first half ended goalless.
The second half saw both teams intensify their efforts. Lookman had another promising chance 18 minutes into the second period, following some fine teamwork from Atalanta, but the Genoa goalkeeper made a vital save.
However, Atalanta’s quality eventually paid off in the 68th minute. Lookman displayed great awareness, seizing an opportunity from a left-wing cross.
Despite facing pressure from a Genoa defender and being on the ground after a challenge, he managed to strike the ball into the net.
Initially, the referee disallowed the goal for offside, but after a four-minute VAR review, it was confirmed as legitimate.
Lookman was substituted in the 79th minute, replaced by Mario Pasalic. Genoa went on the offensive for the remainder of the game.
Following a swift counterattack, Ederson scored Atalanta’s second goal, sealing a 2-0 victory.
Lookman’s goal marked his 16th in 40 appearances for Atalanta in Serie A.
This achievement matched his goal tally from 118 appearances across the top five European leagues, including spells with Leicester, Fulham, Leipzig, and Everton.
