The Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, could hardly have chosen a more immediate way to bring the 2026/27 season to life.

Shooting Stars and Inter Lagos will meet in the opening fixture of the new campaign, with the South-West derby set to provide the first competitive action of NPFL 27.

For Inter Lagos, this is the first step into the NPFL after a promotion that confirmed their rapid rise through the Nigerian football pyramid.

They finished top of one of the Southern Region groups in the Nigeria National League, NNL, last season to secure promotion, and now their first taste of life in the top flight comes against one of the oldest and most recognisable clubs in the country.

Shooting Stars enter the fixture from a very different place.

A major resructuring last season brought a renewed sense of excitement around the club and, importantly, gave their supporters something to believe in again. The work translated onto the pitch. Shooting Stars finished third in the NPFL, securing continental football and ending a 27 year wait to return to the CAF Confederation Cup.

Now they have been given the honour, and the responsibility, of opening the new season.

There is an interesting contrast to the fixture.

Inter Lagos are the newcomers, arriving in the NPFL with the energy that comes with finally reaching the top division. Shooting Stars are the established name, returning to continental football and trying to build on a season that changed the mood around the club.

Neither side needs reminding that the opening game is more than just the first three points available.

Shooting Stars have the home advantage. Inter Lagos have the opportunity to announce themselves.

For both clubs, it is an opening fixture. For the league, it is an opening statement.

And there is plenty happening elsewhere on Matchday 1.

Rivers United will host Plateau United, while Ikorodu City begin their campaign at home against Ranchers Bees.

Defending champions Rangers International will face Katsina United as they begin their title defence, while Doma United and Sporting Lagos will meet in a contest between two newly promoted sides.

Bendel Insurance will host Warri Wolves. Abia Warriors face Kun Khalifat FC. Niger Tornadoes will take on Enyimba, while Kwara United complete the round against Kano Pillars.

Barau FC will also begin their NPFL campaign against Nasarawa United.

There will be new squads to assess, new players trying to establish themselves and new managers under pressure to get their teams moving quickly. Some clubs will arrive with ambitions of challenging at the top. Others will be thinking about survival long before the season reaches its halfway point.

But none of them will have the distinction of going first. That belongs to Shooting Stars and Inter Lagos.

The opening fixture can disappear quickly once the league begins to take shape. By December, the result may be one of 38 games on the table. By the end of the season, it could be remembered for little more than the points it produced.

But on the opening day, before the table has a story and before the season has found its rhythm, the first game carries something different.

It is the first chance to set a tone.

For Shooting Stars, it is the beginning of another attempt to build on last season’s revival. For Inter Lagos, it is the moment their promotion becomes real.

The big news is that NPFL 27 starts in the South West.

And it starts with a derby.

Shooting Stars and Inter Lagos will kick off the round on 28 August, with the remaining fixtures scheduled for 30 August.
