In a showdown that unfolded on Monday evening in Portugal, the Super Eagles of Nigeria emerged victorious with a thrilling 3-2 win over Mozambique during their second international friendly clash.
The win marked a significant milestone for Coach Jose Peseiro, who celebrated his first victory with the Super Eagles after series of international friendlies.
The journey to this victory began when the Super Eagles faced off against Saudi Arabia in their first match last Friday, October 13, 2023, resulting in a hard-fought 2-2 draw.
Mozambique’s Geny Catamo shook the Super Eagles early on, netting a remarkable goal in the seventh minute.
However, the Nigerian side, with standout performances from Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka, and an assist from Oluwafisayo Dele Bashiru, managed to clinch the victory.
Terem Moffi swiftly leveled the score at 1-1 for Nigeria, showcasing his prowess with a 19th-minute goal in the first half.
Moments later, in the 39th minute, Frank Onyeka elevated the Super Eagles to a 2-1 lead.
Moses Simon continued the momentum by extending the lead with a goal in the second minute of first-half extra time, solidifying Nigeria’s advantage at 3-1.
The second half saw a resurgence from Mozambique, as Faisal Abdul Bangal, assisted by Geny Catamo, narrowed the score to 3-2 in favor of Mozambique during the 56th minute.
Mozambique faced adversity when Edmilson Gabriel Dove received a red card in the 39th minute of the first half.
In a tactical move, Coach Jose Peseiro made three pivotal substitutions to the Super Eagles’ starting lineup in the 75th minute of the second half, yet no positive result at the end.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will regroup in November as they gear up for the World Cup qualifiers, setting their sights on the upcoming AFCON tournament next year.
