In an exclusive statement, stand-in captain David Philip has unveiled the relentless determination of Akwa United to end their winless streak in the NPFL as they face off against Gombe United on Matchday six, scheduled for Wednesday at the Eket Stadium.
The Promise Keepers, currently holding only three points from five matches, are poised for a redemption opportunity, according to Philip.
He expressed his belief that the mid-week clash, marking their sixth encounter in the ongoing campaign, is a chance for the players to elevate the team’s position in the league standings.
“Our position on the league table is a matter of great concern to everyone at the club and we are fully aware that it is up to us to get it right in our next game. It’s unbelievable that we are without a win after five matches. Where we are on the table doesn’t really reflect the way we played those games,” Philip said.
David Philip went on to emphasize the positive atmosphere in the team’s camp, citing high motivation and a shared desire to contribute to the team’s success.
He underlined the team’s commitment and determination, stating that they are resolute in their pursuit of a win, starting with the upcoming mid-week encounter against Gombe United.
The Akwa United Captain added;
“We know it’s not going to be easy but we are prepared and ready to give our all and ensure we record victory. The league is very competitive and we know how much a win will boost our confidence and where we will be on the log. Victory on Wednesday may be the much needed turn around to kickstart our season“.
David Philip, who was a key part of Akwa United’s NPFL championship-winning team in 2021, has stepped up as captain in the absence of Etim Mathew and Jean Efala.
The left-back, who has been a consistent presence in all five games this season, has already registered a goal to his name this season.
Akwa United enters the game with a strong head-to-head record against Gombe United, having secured eight wins compared to Gombe United’s three, with three matches ending in draws.
Impressively, Gombe United has suffered defeat in all seven of their previous visits to Akwa Ibom.
