Taiwo Afolabi has taken to her social media page to celebrate a remarkable feat as Nigeria women’s football league champions Delta Queens kicked off their WAFU B Champions League Qualifiers with a resounding victory against USFA of Burkina Faso.
Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium saw the reigning NWFL champs cruise to a 3-0 win over their visitors in the opening game of the campaign on Sunday.
Goals from Alaba Olabiyi, Chinaza Agor, and Mercy Omokwo were all the Delta Queens needed to prove their dominance over the US des Forces Armées.
The opening goal came swiftly, just 5 minutes into the game, courtesy of Alaba Olabiyi’s precision.
The momentum continued to build as Chinaza Agoh widened the lead to 2-0 just 16 minutes into the second half, leaving their opponents struggling to catch up.
However, all hopes of a comeback were dashed when Mercy Omokwo sealed the victory 18 minutes later, making sure the game was beyond the reach of their visitors.
Despite playing the game with 10 players after Vera Samuel received a marching order, the 10-woman Nigerian side made a strong start to their WAFU B Qualifier campaign.
Delta Queens captain Taiwo Afolabi, who couldn’t hide her joy after the game, took to her Twitter account to celebrate her remarkable feat.
“Up Delta Queens, my first assignment as the captain of Delta Queens ends in a massive win. This is a team effort as we aim for the ultimate prize in the Wafu B Zonal Champions League Qualifiers,” she noted.
What a way for the Nigeria Champions to kick-start their campaign at the Wafu B Zonal Champions League Qualifiers!
Chinaza Agoh of Delta Queen was later named the player of the match as well.
