Real Madrid, Villarreal, Real Betis and Osasuna made it two wins from two and Barcelona recorded a big win over the weekend as the 2022-23 LaLiga season entered round two.
Defending champions Real Madrid were outstanding at Balaidos as they thrashed Celta Vigo 4-1 on Saturday night to make it two wins in two.
Karim Benzema put Los Blancos ahead with a penalty on 14 minutes but Iago Aspas equalised for Celta nine minutes later.
Madrid were ahead again thanks to a wonderful finish from Luka Modric in the 42nd minute and in the 56th minute, Modric released Vinícius Júnior through on goal with a brilliant through pass and the Brazilian made no mistake, going round Agustín Marchesín to slot home in the 56th minute.
A superb counter-attacking move saw Federico Valverde make sure of the points with a classy finish six minutes after the hourmark – despite a penalty miss from Eden Hazard in the 87th minute.
FC Barcelona returned to winning ways as they beat Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Reale Arena.
Robert Lewandowki scored his first goal to put Barça in front inside one minute but Sociedad equalised via Alexander Isak six minutes later.
However, the introduction of Ansu Fati changed things for the Blaugrana.
The young Spaniard got his name on the scoresheet in the 79th minute, but before that, provided assists for Ousmane Dembélé and Robert Lewandowki who netted on 66 and 68 minutes respectively.
Diego Simeone’s Atleticó Madrid lost 0-2 at the Wanda Metropolitano to Villarreal on Sunday.
In a game which Nahuel Molina received a red card in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time, late goals from Yéremy Pino (73′) and Gerard Moreno (90+7′) secured three points for Villarreal who made it successive wins as they sit at the top of the log on goals difference.
Real Betis Balompié also made it consecutive wins in their start to this season with a 2-1 win at RCD Mallorca.
Borja Iglesias put Betis ahead from the penalty spot on nine minutes but Verdat Muriqi equalised for Mallorca, four minutes before the hourmark.
Iglesias netted again in the 73rd minute from 12 yards out to secure the points for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
Goals from the penalty spot via Chimy Àvila on 37 minutes and Kike García helped Osasuna to a 2-0 win against 10-man Cádiz CF.
Tomás Alarcón saw red as the win at Estadio El Sadar ensured Osasuna made it two wins in a row to begin their campaign as they sit fourth.
Sevilla remain winless this season as they played out a 1-1 draw with Real Valladolid at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Friday.
Valladolid looked like they were going to get maximum points thanks to Anuar’s goal on 80 minutes but Karim Rekik equalised for Julen Lopetegui’s side in the 86th minute.
Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Club inflicted a first defeat on Gennaro Gattuso’s Valencia thanks a 42nd minute goal from Álex Berenguer at the New San Mamés.
The first game of the matchday on Friday saw Rayo Vallecano win 2-0 at Espanyol thanks to goals from Isi Palazon and Ismaila Ciss.
Two games will take center stage today as Elche CF and Girona FC will host UD Almería and Getafe respectively.
