Introducing Todd Boehly

On March 2, 2022, football fans worldwide were greeted with the news that Roman Abramovich would be parting ways with Chelsea Football club due to the crisis between Russia and Ukraine. After a complex process which at some point was threatened by sanctions on the Russian Oligarch, the Roman Era, which officially began on July 2, 2003, came to an end on May 30, 2022.

The Consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed a takeover for £4.25 billion. Very few people can argue against the fact that the West London side became a footballing powerhouse under the Russian’s watch as they carted home 21 trophies in 19 years, with the club winning every major trophy available in the game except the FIFA World Cup. Hahaha, sure, you already know they are not allowed to compete for that.

Abramovich said in a statement via the official Chelsea website: “As I hand over Chelsea to its new custodians, I would like to wish them the best of success, both on and off the pitch. It has been an honour of a lifetime to be a part of this club — I would like to thank all the club’s past and current players, staff, and fans for these incredible years.

Success on the pitch is a collective effort, and one key element is the playing personnel of the First team squad. This is one area where anyone could hardly fault the Roman Era, as the Russian was never one to shy away from splashing the cash with a net spend of around £880m.

The English Premier League fans would be keen to see precisely what Todd Boehly and his management team serve at Stamford Bridge. Still, unlike Roman, who was relatively unknown before he acquired Chelsea, Todd is not new to managing a Sports team. He took a Dodgers team in disarray primarily due to bad management and turned them into perennial title contenders.

In his first four years as President of the LA Dodgers Baseball team, a whopping $1 billion was spent on new players, and they are currently the most significant spending club in Major League Baseball. For most Chelsea fans, this should allay their fears about the lack of a “Sugar Daddy.” However, Boehly is a bit more methodical in contrast to Roman’s spending.

One of his first moves was to get Andrew Friedman onboard and make him the best-paid Executive in MLB. In line with his love for data-driven acquisitions, the LA Dodgers now boasts of one of the biggest Analytics departments in the sport. ESPN revealed in their article profiling the American Billionaire that the Dodgers have established a reputation for improving flawed players and paying some of the most competitive salaries in the league.

The Dodgers eventually landed some success when, in 2020, their 32-year wait for a World Series victory came to a glorious end. It sounds like Chelsea’s 50-year wait for a Premier League title, right?

So far, in this summer’s transfer window, he has shown himself to be a willing spender and already looks like deploying the same template that brought significant success to his Dodgers team, having already reportedly opened discussions with former Liverpool transfer guru and Sporting director; Michael Edwards.

Boehly, who is described as an aggressive businessman and a committed winner, like Abramovich, has a strong desire to win but is a massive contrast to the Russian billionaire in many other ways. While Roman hardly ever appeared before the cameras and primarily maintained a secretive approach, the aviator sunglasses, and Chinos-loving American billionaire isn’t one to shy away from the public.

The former High School wrestler has promised Chelsea fans some premium entertainment garnished with many thrills and lavish hospitality while maintaining the winning culture that characterized the Roman Abramovich era. Still, the foundation for all of this success begins with the summer transfer window, and fans would be looking to see what Todd has got in his tray for dinner.
