Hurray! The World Cup in Qatar is just one day away!
As we wind down on the countdown, we thought it fitting to share one of the most comical moments ever in a World Cup match.
Followers of European football would be aware of the iconic San Siro stadium in Italy, which hosts one of the fiercest rivalries in Italian football because Inter and AC Milan share it. Officially, the stadium is called the Guiseppe Meazza stadium and has a seating capacity of more than 80,000, which makes it one of Europe’s biggest.
The main character in one of football showpiece’s most comical moments is Italy’s Captain to the 1938 World Cup, Guiseppe Meazza. In the semi-final match against Brazil, Italy was awarded a penalty with the score at 1-0 in favour of Italy. As Guiseppe Meazza stepped up to take the penalty, the World witnessed one of the most embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions. The elastic band in his shorts ripped, and his shorts fell. Holding his falling shorts in his left hand, he put the ball in the net beyond the Brazilian goalkeeper, who was still laughing.
Continuing our series, we will focus on the best Number 1 from the last World Cup, and he is none other than Belgium’s Thibaut Courtois.
In the buildup to the World Cup, there was a lot of noise surrounding the Belgian shot-stopper, who was in the final year of his contract with Premier League giants Chelsea. The outspoken goalkeeper had rejected several big offers from the West London outfit, who were not very keen to lose their first-choice goalkeeper, especially given his reputation as one of the best in the World in his position. Courtois eventually got his dream move to Real Madrid in a 35million Euros deal. Thankfully, the fax machine did not fail.
Courtois was excellent in goal throughout the campaign as Belgium’s Red Devils finished in third place, only losing to eventual champions France in the semi-finals. He made a remarkable 27 saves and kept three clean sheets en route to winning the Tournament’s Golden Gloves award.
Courtois is heading into the 2022 World Cup coming off a fantastic season with Real Madrid, where he won the La Liga and UCL titles. The big question is, who dethrones the outspoken Belgian in Qatar?
Hmmm asking that question, I really don’t see anyone at this moment
But can’t wait for the biggest Football tournament to kick off
Great one again to wrap off the series…. Talking of dethronement, I don’t see anyone yet unless there’s a surprise package.
